THE ANDROMEDANS LAMENT

The most popular form of music among the Andromeda is lament singing. Many generations ago they had heard about the traditions carried out by the women of certain other tribes, taking particular interest in the Finnish style, in which the song is maintained without interruption, a feat accomplished by the technique of singing on the inhale as well as the exhale. Taking particular delight in this unique timbre, they have adapted it in such a way that now, in their own lament tradition, the singing is only done while inhaling.

The laments are, as is generally true elsewhere, only performed by females. Among the Andromeda only a few have the requisite aptitude, and these special singers are trained in the art from a young age. The singers always perform in groups of three, always the same three together. Each singer has an understudy. If for any reason one of the principle singers is unable to perform, her understudy takes her place, permanently, regardless of her level of accomplishment.

Lament singing became so popular that after a while the Andromedans became frustrated. People just weren’t dying enough, but the music was only sung specifically to mourn a loss. So the Andromedans began coming up with new things to sing about. They now have songs lamenting the demise of the vinyl record, and the return of ‘70s fashions. They lament, with great pathos, the elimination of lard from virtually every major brand of flour tortillas. Frankly, the Andromeda have found that there are plenty of sad things to lament in their society, which is a good thing, because now they can enjoy lament singing as much as they want.
